AUXILIARY NOTES

Membership

Membership for 2011 (reported locally) is 55 as of October 4,  47.00% of goal. Membership goal for our unit is 117.

Auxiliary Projects

1. Save grocery coupons. They must be national coupons, but most cannot be used more than six (6) months beyond the expiration date. They should be for food, household, and baby items. They are sent to various military installations for use by military personnel. These coupons can be used in the commissary on double coupon days and are a tremendous help to supplement allotments.

2.Canceled postage stamps are again being collected and sent to a veterans' treatment facility where processing them is part of a therapy program.

3.Save soda (pop) can tabs for the Ronald McDonald houses in our area.

IOWA VETERANS HOME HOLIDAY GIFT SHOP

Two days are dedicated to wrapping gifts for the residents of Iowa Veterans Home to give to relatives and friends. The American Legion Auxiliary purchases a supply of gifts for each resident to choose two (2) gifts to give to two others for the holiday. During two work days, after the gifts are chosen, a crew of Auxiliary members and Legionnaires wraps the gifts to give or ship to the recipients.

Gifts will be selected and wrapped Tuesday and Wednesday, December 7 and 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. Call 641-753-4371 for dinner reservations. Locally you may call Lois Slaba at 352-3734 for more information. Men are also welcome to help.

WAVP UPDATE

The following was presented to us at our October meeting: A generous offer was made to the WAVP fundraising committee recently. Milora Johanns’ grandfather has offered to build a grandfather clock to be used to help raise funds for the new Veterans building. If the four Veterans groups will provide funding for the mechanical workings of the clock, he will provide the wood and the all important “labor” to build it. If the Veterans groups approve the proposal at their business meetings this month, we will shortly know that he can go ahead with the plan. Thank you in advance to the Johanns family for their generosity in helping us in our endeavors to construct a building all of Waverly will be proud of.

The request is for $150.00 from each of the four Veterans organizations. We responded by committing $150.00. If you want to make a gift to offset part of this amount, give it to Martin Heering in a clearly marked envelope or check indicating it is for this project. Your donation will be tax deductible and will offset our Post commitment.

At the present time a fundraising drive is focused on the membership of our four veterans service organizations. The next phase will expand it to all identified veterans in Bremer County before expanding it to the surrounding community at large. If you are interested in more information, I would like to give you a clearly identified telephone number, but none is provided. You may try Jim Beam at 319-939-3507. Jim is chairman of WAVP.
