LEGISLATIVE DAY
If you are interested in state legislative issues relating
to wartime military veterans, Legislative Day Wednesday, January
18, is for you. Activities begin with an orientation meeting at Department
Headquarters, 720 Lyon Street, Des Moines, at 8:00 a.m. From there everyone
is shuttled as a group to the State Capitol for a group presentation and

maintain and improve veterans’ benefits by the state of Iowa.

AMERICAN LEGION BIRTHDAY PARTY
Sunday, March 11, is the day for our
celebration of the birthday of The American Legion.
Social gathering begins at 5:00 p.m. with potluck
dinner at 6:00 p.m. Bring one hot dish and one cold
dish (only one of the two for one person), and bring
your own table service. Birthday cake, ice cream and
beverage will be provided..
CHILI AND OYSTER SUPPER
Since the March date worked well in 2009 the
decision was made to use the same time in 2012. It is still not too late for
a good turn out and the weather is less likely to cause a postponement or
cancellation. Further planning will be done at our February meeting.
Thursday, March 15, 2012, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the annual Chili and Oyster
Supper will be served at the Legion Hall. Tickets for the Supper will
probably be the same as last year, $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children.
Tickets will be available for sale at our March meeting. Please help with
selling them.
Set up and serving assignments will also be discussed and made at the March
meetings. If you have any preference or limitation, contact your commander
or president with a time and task to offer your services.
LEGION HALL RENTAL
Anyone wanting to rent the Legion Hall should contact Hubert
Barber at 352-3112 or Martin Heering at 352-4509. Check with one of them for
rates, availability, and terms of use.
POST MEMBERSHIP
The target for our post for 2012 is 155. On December 16 our
membership was 118, 76.13% of target. Dues are $30.00 per year. Please pay
yours as soon as possible.

AUXILIARY UNIT #176
NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT
Thank you to the 27 who came to the December meeting. We
need good attendance to keep our programs going.
Contributions of paper products were very good. These were taken to the
local food pantry. We collect these once a year to be used by people who
depend on food stamps which cannot be used for napkins, paper towels, etc.
We went to Iowa Veterans Home to work at the Holiday Gift Shoppe for the
residents. Each resident can choose two gifts to send to friends or
relatives. The gifts are provided by the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary.
Eight of us worked on Tuesday and three of us worked on Wednesday.
Worker turnout for the membership dinner was too small. We made the decision
that the next one should be at Heritage United Methodist Church. Too few
were left with too much work. Cleanup had enough workers, but setup had too
few too late. Note to the men: We need your help and plenty of it for soup
suppers and other such activities. Also when you sign up, show up on time,
find a replacement, or tell the person in charge you cannot be there.
Donna Kay Oberheu, Unit President
MEMBERSHIP
Membership for 2012 is 100 as of December 16, 86.967% of
goal. Membership goal for our unit is 115.
AUXILIARY PROJECTS
1. Save grocery coupons. (DISCONTINUED immediately;
money used to ship the coupons will be placed in a local welfare fund for
veterans.)
2. Save soda (pop) can tabs for the Ronald McDonald houses in our area.
MID-WINTER PARTICIPATION
More unit members should go to the Mid-Winter Conference in
Des Moines in mid-February. It is a great opportunity to learn more about
the Auxiliary mission and activities and exchange ideas with other Auxiliary
member in the state of Iowa. Time is short this year but consider it next
year. Talk to those who have attended. It concentrates more on activities
and less on meetings. It is worthwhile for those who would rather do things
beside sit in meetings. Broaden your personal horizons in The American
Legion Auxiliary. You may be surprised at how much you can learn.
ANNUAL FOOD BASKETS
We are continuing our tradition of giving food baskets in
the form of food certificates to 15 families or individuals who need help
with getting enough to eat. They are distributed in early December to people
needing help identified by helping organization without revealing their
identities. This year the certificates are distributed by Cedar Valley
Friends of the Family. We sometimes get thank yous from some of the
recipients although that is not required. We do, however, identify ourselves
as the giver.

ASSISTENCE FOR WOUNDED WARRIOR
Our Post and Unit provided monetary help with living expenses for a recent wounded veteran of the war in Afghanistan. He needs treatment for war wounds, his one daughter had complications with a tonsillectomy and he was removed from the National Guard payroll. He was deactivated from federal duty without adequate medical treatment. His application for treatment by the Department of Defense and parallel restoration to the federal payroll are still pending. Until then he is in need of financial assistance from other sources including us.
Expecting people to live without income and no ability to earn one is out of touch with reality. We hope they receive the needed help soon. Thank you for helping. --editor
