September to Remember – By Ray Fredrick

On Dec. 18,2001 Congress designated Sept. 11 of each year “Patriot Day”. Pres. Bush signed the proclamation and called upon us to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. He also called upon all to display their flags at half-staff that day. Also, we are asked to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 am EDT to honor the victims who lost their lives on that terrible Tuesday. And Beyond the yellow ribbons- it is possible that your calendar does not show Sept. 17th as POW/MIA Recognition Day. The reason for that it was only recently decided, and ordered, the date would be the 3rd Friday of each Sept. But let not the absence of marks on calendars diminish the importance of the day to honor the POW/MIAS of every war-those returned and those still missing and unaccounted for. Take a good look at the flag. The simple picture reflects harsh and brutal captivity, but it does not begin to describe the dreadful days and months and years endured by so many. Also, it says on there “You are Not Forgotten”. Let’s make sure that simple statement Holds True! Support the National League of POW/MIA Families at 703-465-7432. Call our Governor’s office and ask for his full support and then demand that the POW/MIA Flag be flown at our Capitol. Call your congressperson and demand maximum effort toward a full accounting for those still missing. Finally, display one of those black and silver emblems where you live, if that is possible. Be part of this noble effort.
